Movie Plot Summary:
Fifteen-year-old Oliver Tate has two big ambitions: to save his parents' marriage via carefully plotted intervention and to lose his virginity before his next birthday. Worried that his mom is having an affair with New Age weirdo Graham, Oliver monitors his parents' sex life by charting the dimmer switch in their bedroom. He also forges suggestive love letters from his mom to dad. Meanwhile, Oliver attempts to woo his classmate, Jordana, a self-professed pyromaniac who supervises his journal writing - especially the bits about her. When necessary, she orders him to cross things out. Based on Joe Dunthorne's acclaimed novel, Submarine is a captivating coming-of-age story with an offbeat edge.

Submarine was adapted from a novel and directed by a British comic, Richard Ayoade. It is set in Wales in the mid-80s but the year isn't too important; you only know it is the '80s because of a reference to the new movie Crocodile Dundee. The main character who provides a lot of voice over narration is Oliver Tate, a 15 year old high school student who is quite adept at analyzing his popularity status and various options in wooing girls. The film has a Rushmore vibe, but Oliver Tate is no Max Fischer. The majority of the plot is an ellipsis around two poles, Oliver nurtures the beginnings of a relationship with the feisty Jordana and he suspects his mother of infidelity with the new next door neighbor who wears black leather pants and proclaims himself a mystic. Oliver does not balance these two 'problems' very well and the pole involving his mother's suspected infidelity feels forced and trite.

I do not recognize the two actors who play Oliver and Jordana, Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige, but I suppose if you watch TV in Britain you will. The poster has a large "Ben Stiller Presents" at the top of it so the film has star-backing and I even think he makes a cameo but it would be very hard to see him. Submarine is slated for a 10 June U.S. release but I am not recommending this movie; go watch Rushmore again.

I got the chance to attend a sneak peek of director, Mike Mills', latest film last night at one of the Reel Affirmations film festival's monthly screenings. I like Mills' films. They've got a moody, tortured aesthetic, and this one is no different. The story is primarily about the relationship between a man, Oliver (Ewan McGregor), and his father, Hal (Christopher Plummer). When Hal dies, Oliver is left to contemplate his life, their relationship, and all the poor choices each of them had made up until this point. We see the world through Oliver's eyes, and so the whole film is suffused with an overall tone of deep sadness. He can't seem to make any of his romantic relationships work, but then he's never really had any good role models. You see, after the death of his mother four years prior, Hal finally came out to his son as gay—at the ripe age of seventy-five. It's a very touching, and lightly sweet moment. Oliver is happy that his father hasn't given up on life, and is finally pursuing true love, but he just can't forget the years of isolation and loneliness his mother went through. Commence the sad wallowing.

Of course, all this changes when Oliver meets an alluring, winsome French girl (Melanie Laurent). Anna is an actress, and she's just about as bad at relationships as Oliver. They don't know much about each other, but they're both beautiful, damaged souls, so they get on like a house on fire. And somehow, Oliver is thinking less and less about his parents. Those ladies can be mighty distracting! But, not distracting enough to totally conceal either of these attractive kids' inherent personality flaws. But they're pretty fetching while they're working out their demons!

This is a wonderful film. It really captures the deep emotions people feel for each other, and even lets the audience feel some of them for themselves. There were definitely moments during the screening that had people surreptitiously wiping tears from the corners of their eyes. But, it's also sexy and funny too. We get to enjoy Oliver and Anna's uncertain flirtation. And, we also get to savor Hal's belated (but not too late!) blossoming. He's as giddy and nervous as a school-girl at her first dance, but he ultimately takes to his new life like a fish to water, even as late to the game as he is. This movie is a real crowd pleaser, and it's one that just about everyone will enjoy. The pacing is deliberate and solemn, but the story sucks you in enough that you barely notice. You can even bring a date to this one. It's not one to miss.

They struggle numbly through the funeral, the media onslaught, and the awkward pity from relatives and friends. Their already strained marriage is tested as they realize all they have left with each other is their shared grief and confusion -- and the unfortunate legacy of their son. This life-altering event forces Bill and Kate to face their feelings of guilt, rage, blame, self-discovery -- and ultimately hope -- so that they can finally see each other and their chance for happiness again with clear eyes.

The words in the trailer give the perfect canvas to draw upon for the film. In a single moment your entire life can change. The hardest part of moving on is letting go, and finding the courage to forgive; to regret; and to love. To comfort those around us in times of need we often use words like hope, heal, trust, hurt, feel, and rebuild. However, it is the word "live" that is the most important. When the emotions of life have gotten the better of us, we forget how to live. This is a film about living. So rarely do you find such a beautiful debut film for a writer/director, but Shawn Ku has done just this with "Beautiful Boy". The decision to use distant camera shots that are then zoomed in provides a layer between the characters and the audience that works in this film as we are invading the private lives during their most difficult times.

The film follows the emotional journey of Bill (Michael Sheen) and wife Kate (Maria Bello) who are coping with the loss of their son from a college shooting incident. The blurred foreground as you peak through a window, or from another room in the house, to see and hear a conversation is perfect as their lives are forever going to be in a fish bowl. We all want to stare and look, but are afraid to get close and truly understand what they are experiencing. The film deals with a topic that is for the most part unfamiliar to all of us. We have seen the unfortunate tragedies of Thurston HS (1998), Columbine HS (1999), and Virginia Tech (2007). However, the emotions of the families are completely foreign.

The supporting roles are quietly powerful with Alan Tudyk (mostly known for his role of Steve the Pirate in "Dodgeball") as the brother of Kate, who defends his sister to his own wife when she is acting like "supermom" to her nephew. Then there is Meat Loaf as a hotel manager that says what we all are thinking. However, the best of the supporting cast might be Deidre Henry as the neighbor who quietly delivers the best performance. Her comforting hug to Kate is exactly what you in the audience might want to do.

London, May 31 : British singer Alexandra Burke has reportedly been offered the job of playing Whitney Houston's character in a West End version of "The Bodyguard".

Directed by Mick Jackson, the movie is about about a former secret service agent who takes on the job of a bodyguard to a pop singer. Theater bosses are keen to sign Burke as Rachel, one of the leading roles, because of her powerful pipes.

They're taking their adaptation of the hit 1992 film to the stage next year and have told the 22-year-old that the role is hers if she wants it.

"Alexandra is torn - the show would be an amazing gig and especially in London while the Olympics are on and it's in the spotlight. But she also has her second album to think about," sun. co. uk quoted a source as saying.(IANS)

Actor Shahrukh Khan's upcoming film Ra.One will enter the Limca Book Of Records by circulating the longest fan mail in the world. Shahrukh, who plays a superhero in the film has planned to start the longest fan mail for the film.

This is a part of Ra.One's promotional strategies. This strategy aims at earning popularity for the film at every nook and corner of the Indian cities. Shahrukh, who has planned to unveil Ra.One's promo across five cities in India, has started his inter-city tour today for promoting his film.

The boyfriend of LaShawna Threatt said he grabbed on to the back of her hair as she was falling out of the W Atlanta-Midtown hotel.
Then he ran to the elevator to get outside and help Threatt, an aspiring model celebrating her 30th birthday that day.

“Thank God it wasn’t daytime; I would have jumped out, no question,” Ray Hamilton told the AJC. “I couldn’t see anything out that window, though, it was pitch black.”
Threatt and a friend, Cierra Williams, 25, fell from the 10th floor of the W around 3:15 a.m. Saturday. Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos said the two fell onto a slanted sunroof adjoining the hotel. Threatt stayed on the sunroof but Williams rolled off and onto the ground.
Threatt was killed, and Williams remained in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital Tuesday.

Hamilton said he and six others had barely been in the hotel room for 10 minutes when the incident happened. They were returning to the room after dinner and then spending time on the hotel's rooftop.

“Everybody had just walked in and kicked off their shoes,” he said.
“There was no unruly activity, there was no one drunk, there was no party in the room,” he said.
Hamilton and another friend were standing next to Threatt and Williams, who were near the window, horseplaying, tickling each other and hugging, Hamilton said.
“LaShawna, she’s just a very affectionate person,” Hamiltion said.
Williams’ back was to the window, and Threatt was standing in front of her, Hamilton said.
“They leaned back a little bit, and they just went out,” he said.

Another friend in the room tried to grab Threatt’s arm.
Hamilton cut his hand on the glass while trying to hang on to his girlfriend to stop her from falling. Bleeding, he ran to the elevator and then outside.
“I come out of the door, see someone on the floor, and I just drop to the ground … I crawled over to her, covered her and said, ‘Hey, baby, stay with me, it’s going to be OK,” said Hamilton before he realized that the woman on the ground was Williams.

He stood up to look for Threatt but by that time Atlanta police officers had arrived.
“It’s been a nightmare for me,” Hamilton said. “How do two girls who weigh maybe 120 pounds a piece, standing at the window, build up enough force to not only break it but go out immediately?”
Campos with the APD said investigators won't know if alcohol was involved until toxicology reports are completed, but a crime is not suspected.
"It appears that there was no malicious act, no foul play," said Atlanta police homicide commander, Lt. Paul Guerrucci. "They were just wrestling with each other. They hit the window. The window broke. And they fell out."
Threatt was a model, who also did party promotions for alcoholic beverage companies.
Williams is a dancer, said Passionate Chonvill, who owns a marketing company.
"She is a background dancer. Very big in urban dancing," Chonvill said. "She is in love with dancing."

Jomarys Castillo, 24, a friend of Threatt, said earlier Saturday, about 20 friends met at an Atlantic Station restaurant for a celebration dinner.
"It was her 30th birthday and it was wonderful and fabulous, just like she was," said Castillo, who knew Threatt though modeling circles.
Afterwards, most of the group went to the hotel, where Threatt had a rooftop party, said Castillo.
Castillo did not follow the group to the hotel.



"The last thing we talked about was her wanting to come to my baby's first birthday party on Aug. 11," said Castillo through tears. "Her idol was Marilyn Monroe, so it is kind of ironic that she would die so young."
Chonvill, who is another close friend of Threatt, said she missed the party as well, but confirmed from her friends who were there that the two were playing around.
"LaShawna is a mess, a silly goofball. She likes to play fight and tickle you. They had just gotten in the hotel and were having a good time," Chonvill said. "My friends who were there, said it was so random. They literally just fell out the window. They are two small girls and I am trying to figure out how the hell, two small girls could break a window like that."
In a statement issued Saturday morning hotel manager Michael O'Donohue, said further information about the accident and investigation would have to come from police.

NEW YORK — Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and a fellow "Jersey Shore" cast member have been involved in a minor traffic accident in Italy.
The popular MTV reality show is filming its fourth season in Florence.

The network said in a statement late Monday that two cast members were involved in a crash. The statement said no alcohol was involved and no one was arrested. It provided no further details.

Phone messages left for Snooki's manager, Scott Talarico, were not immediately returned Monday night.

SallyAnn Salsano, executive producer at "Jersey Shore" production company 495, tells The Star-Ledger newspaper that the incident was "just a minor fender bender." She says the show is still filming.

Photos posted on celebrity gossip website TMZ.com show Polizzi and co-star Deena Nicole Cortese, apparently uninjured, sitting on the sidewalk after the crash.

The show's first and third season are set in Seaside Heights, N.J. The second season sent the cast to Miami.

NEW YORK — Lady Gaga sold more than 1.1 million copies of her new album "Born This Way" and set a digital sales record last week — with an assist from Amazon.com.

Billboard announced Tuesday that "Born This Way" debuted at No. 1 on its Billboard 200 album chart, becoming just the 17th album to sell a million copies in its first week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991 and the top-selling digital debut.

The dance pop provocateur is just the fifth female with a an album that sold more than a million copies in the SoundScan era.

Lady Gaga's first No. 1 album sold the most copies of any debut since March 2005 when 50 Cent's "The Massacre" sold 1.14 million. The last million-selling album was Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" in November.

Amazon's attention-grabbing download price of 99 cents last Tuesday and Thursday helped drive "Born This Way" to an unprecedented 662,000 in digital sales, pushing the album to nearly three times initial estimates by Universal Music Group. Amazon sold more than 440,000 of those copies alone, but with mixed results.

The online retailer did grab the spotlight it had hoped in its battle for a larger piece of the online market, which is dominated by Apple's iTunes. But it came with an image hit when customers overwhelmed Amazon's system.

Amazon's move has been deemed controversial by some observers who say the steep loss of several dollars an album was not worth the investment. Physical outlets also were upset at the advantage given to an online retailer.

Dramatic price cuts are nothing new for Amazon, which regularly trims new and popular album prices to as low as $2.99 through its daily deal program.

London, May 29 : Lady Gaga, who is rarely spotted without her extravagant clothing, has revealed that she does not mind making a spectator of herself when it comes to her shocking outfits.

The unconventional superstar, who had attracted widespread criticism for wearing an outfit made of meat to the ‘Video Music Awards’, fired back at her critics who claimed that she is a fraud.

The ‘Poker face’ singer said that she does not mind making a spectacle of herself because she believes in expressing who she is.

“I see myself to be an endless transformative state. I am committed wholeheartedly to theatre with no intermission,” the Daily Mail quoted Gaga as telling author and comedian Stephen Fry.

“I live halfway between reality and fantasy at all times because I choose to and anyone can choose that.

It is being estimated that if the "Hangover" pace holds, the movie may earn up to 85 million dollars over the three-day weekend and a whopping 125 million dollars over the five-day Memorial Day holiday, including Thursday.

The film starring Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis has earned a 33 pc rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 79 pc for the 2009 original.

Nagpur, May 28: Bollywood music director Ismail Darbar has alleged that the coveted Oscar award conferred upon movie `Slumdog Millionaire' in 2009 was compromised and had been "bought" by the recipients.

Slumdog Millionaire, a small budget British film made by Danny Boyle, was named best picture at the Academy Awards in 2009.

Bollywood music director A. R. Rahman also clinched the Oscars for original score and original song in the film to become the first Indian composer to strike gold at the annual Hollywood awards.

Darbar told the media in Nagpur that he "did not understand how the movie won the prestigious award".

"I have heard that the Oscar awards are often bought by artistes and individuals. I never understood how that movie received the Oscar, it is not an ordinary award after all. I know that it was compromised and bought by the recipients," Darbar said.

Darbar also said that he would not have worked for the venture had he been approached by its producers.

"Slumdog Millionaire, on one hand they are calling our country a dog, while on the other they are giving the movie the Oscar. I do not understand this logic. In any case, I would not have taken up the movie in the first place had I been approached," Darbar said.

Rahman had won the Academy Award for the Best Original Song for his number `Jai Ho'.

Shot on a modest budget of 15 million dollars, the movie told the story of a young man looking for love and competing for money on the Indian version of the television game show `Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'.

The movie was a winner in all ways, bagging Oscars for best director, best cinematography, best sound mixing, best film editing, best original score and best song.

It won rave reviews from critics and crossed over from art house success to delight mainstream audience, grossing nearly 100 million dollars domestically to date. (ANI)
