Death Toll Soars in Chile as Rescues Ramp Up

CONCEPCION, Chile - Heroism and banditry mingled on Chile's shattered streets Sunday as rescuers braved aftershocks digging for survivors and the government sent soldiers to quell looting.

The death toll climbed to 708 in one of the biggest earthquakes in centuries.

In the hard-hit city of Concepcion, firefighters pulling survivors from a toppled apartment block were forced to pause because of tear gas fired to stop looters, who were wheeling off everything from microwave ovens to canned milk at a damaged supermarket across the street.

Efforts to determine the full scope of destruction were undermined by an endless string of terrifying aftershocks that continued to turn buildings into rubble. Officials said 500,000 houses were destroyed or badly damaged, and President Michele Bachelet said "a growing number" of people were listed as missing.

"We are facing a catastrophe of such unthinkable magnitude that it will require a giant effort" to recover, Bachelet said after meeting for six hours with ministers and generals in La Moneda Palace, itself chipped and cracked.

She signed a decree giving the military control over security in the province of Concepcion, where looters were pillaging supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies and banks.

The president, who leaves office on March 11, also said the country would accept some of the offers of aid that have poured in from around the world.

She said the country needs field hospitals and temporary bridges, water purification plants and damage assessment experts - as well as rescuers to help relieve workers who have been laboring frantically since the magnitude-8.8 quake struck before dawn Saturday.

To strip away any need for looting, Bachelet announced that essentials on the shelves of major supermarkets would be given away for free, under the supervision of authorities. Troops and police will also distribute food and water, she said.

Although houses, bridges and highways in Santiago were damaged, a few flights managed to land at the airport and subway service resumed.

More chaotic was the region to the south, where the shaking was the strongest and where the quake generated waves that lashed coastal settlements, leaving behind sticks, scraps of metal and masonry houses ripped in two.

In the village of Lloca, a beachside carnival was caught in the tsunami. A carousel was twisted on its side and a ferris wheel rose above the muddy wreckage.

In Concepcion, the largest city in the disaster zone, a new, 15-story apartment building toppled onto its side. Many of those who lived on the side that wound up facing the sky could clamber out; those on the other were trapped. An estimated 60 people remained trapped in the 70-unit apartment building.

Police officer Jorge Guerra took names of the missing from a stream of tearful relatives and friends. He urged them to be optimistic because about two dozen people had been rescued.

"There are people alive. There are several people who are going to be rescued," he said - though the next people pulled from the wreckage were dead.

Rescuers worked carefully for fear of aftershocks. Ninety jolts of magnitude 5 or greater shuddered across the region in the first 24 hours after the quake, including one nearly as large as the earthquake that devastated Haiti on Jan. 12.

Firefighters in Concepcion were about to lower a rescuer deep into the rubble when the scent of tear gas fired at looters across the street forced them to interrupt their efforts.

"It's sad, but because of the situation you have to confront the robberies and at the same time continue the search," Guerra said.

The sound of chain saws, power drills and sledgehammers breaking through concrete competed with the whoosh of a water cannon fired at looters and the shouts of crowds that found new ways into a four-story supermarket each time police retreated.

One woman ran off with a shopping cart piled high with slabs of unwrapped meat and cheese. A shirtless man carried a mattress on his head. Some of the looters pitched rocks at police armored vehicles outside the Lider market, which is majority-owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Across the Bio Bio River in the city of San Pedro, looters cleared out a shopping mall. A video store was set ablaze, two automatic teller machines were broken open, a bank was robbed and a supermarket emptied, its floor littered with mashed plums, scattered dog food and smashed liquor bottles.

"It was a mob. They looted everything," said police Sgt. Rene Gutierrez, 46, who had his men guarding the now-empty mall. "Now we're only here to protect the building - what's left of the building."

He said police had been slow to reach the looted mall because one bridge over the river was collapsed and the other so damaged they had to move cautiously.

Ingenious looters even used long tubes of bamboo and plastic to siphon gasoline from underground tanks at a closed gasoline station. Others rummaged through the station's restaurant.

Thieves attacked a flour mill in Concepcion - some toting away bags on their shoulders, others using bicycles or cars. One man packed a school bus with sacks of flour.

Many defended the scavenging - of food if not television sets - as a necessity because officials had not brought food or water. Even Concepcion's mayor, Jacqueline van Rysselberghe, complained that no food aid was reaching the city. She said the federal government should send troops to help halt the looting.

In Talca, where old adobe buildings in the town center were flattened, many spent the night outside, huddled beneath blankets on lawn chairs, sleeping on a mattress hauled from a damaged home or sheltering in camping tents.

State television showed scenes of devastation in coastal towns and more still on Robinson Crusoe Island, where it said the tsunami drove almost 2 miles (3 kilometers) into the town of San Juan Bautista. Officials said at least five people were killed there and more were missing.

The surge of water raced across the Pacific, setting off alarm sirens and evacuations from Hawaii to Japan, but it did little damage.

I watched SRK-Kajol romance on screen-Arjun Mathur

At a very important juncture in Karan Johar’s MY NAME IS KHAN, all seemed lost for Rizwan Khan, as he ended up in a Guantanamo Bay like prison, with a ’terroristc’ charge slapped on him.

The general audience and hardcore SRK fans went tense as there appeared no way out for their hero, with no solution in sight. Just then stepped in a relatively new character ’Raj’ (SRK’s lucky name, along with Rahul!), who took the story forward with the help of Parvin Dabas who plays a Sikh journo in the film.

Those who still don’t get it; we are talking about the BARAH AANA actor, Arjun Mathur, whose scintillating portrayal of an intellectual NRI student stood tall amongst all the big names in the film. The superb punchy dialogue, where he convinces Bobby Ahuja (Pravin Dabas) to help Rizwan Khan, was greeted with claps by the audience, who seemed zapped by his performance.

Salman and Deepika together Telugu film KICK Remade

For last few weeks, a rumour has been making the rounds that a film called KICK would go on floors soon and it would feature the ’never-paired-before’ couple of Salman and Deepika together. A remake of the namesake Telugu film, it would be produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by A. R. Murugadoss of GHAJINI fame.

"As you mention it yourself, it is plain rumour. Reports of me working with Salman in KICK are untrue. In fact I haven’t been offered any such film", Deepika sets the record straight, hence diluting yet another piece of gossip that was making the rounds of the industry circles.

At his end, Sajid Nadiadwala is pretty gung ho about beginning work on KICK. After the release of HOUSEFULL and once ANJAANA ANJAANI wraps up, it is going to be KICK for the film maker. Though he doesn’t divulge the cast of the film, he does confirm that the film is certainly on.

Given the fact that KICK is said to be starring Salman Khan in the lead, how big can one expect the film to be, especially due to the news making the rounds that it is going to be an out and out action flick?

"First of all let me clarify that KICK is not an out and out action flick", Nadiadwala defuses a rumour here, "Someone just carried out an article stating so though it is nowhere closer to the fact. Secondly, it is too early to talk about the script. We are still in the process of working on it though we should be able to wrap up soon. We begin shooting in August/September."

Woman Gives Birth On Road During President's Quetta Visit

QUETTA: A woman has given birth to her baby on an auto rickshaw over closure of airport road and other connecting roads due to the presence of President Asif Ali Zardari in Quetta.

The woman was riding on a rickshaw, which could not reach the hospital due to the closure of major roads.

The rickshaw carrying the pregnant woman was also not allowed to proceed to the hospital for more than 3 hours. As a result, she suddenly went into the labour in rickshaw and had her baby over there.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani has ordered an inquiry into the closure of airport road.

The airport road, Zarghoon road and other main roads of the city were closed for all kind of traffic hours before the President Zardari?s visit to Quetta. These roads remained closed for several hours during the movement of President Zardari in the city.

The wife of a local resident Momin Khan was also barred from going to hospital.

Despite the fact that the security personnel were informed about the condition of pregnant mother, she was not allowed to go.

Sneha Ullal was known as the Aishwarya Rai-lookalike when she entered the film world but the actress is now keen to carve a niche for herself. After featuring in spooky thriller "Click", she feels it's time she proved her calibre to people who misguided her when she first came to Bollywood.

"See 'Click' is not my comeback in Bollywood because the film doesn't revolve around me. I need a film like 'Lucky' (her debut vehicle) to make a comeback; then I can show what I can do," Sneha told.

"Now it's time I prove myself because there are a lot of people who misguided me in Bollywood - whom I trusted. I never knew Bollywood is like that, you know," she said.

The young actress has already signed two Hindi movies, including one opposite Akshay Kumar.

"I am doing a film with Ashok Tyagi where Akshay Kapoor is my co-star and there is another film with Shubir Mukherjee. The film is being launched by Joy Mukherjee's son Sujoy. One of them is a thriller, the other is a love story and both are expected to release later this year," said Sneha.

Sneha made her debut in 2005 opposite Salman Khan and her second release was "Aryan: Unbreakable" (2006) with Sohail Khan. After that she moved down south and featured in Telugu films like "Nenu Meeku Telusa...?" and "Ullasanga Utsahanga".

"I have done three films in the south and the fourth is releasing in April. In the south, people are very genuine. They will tell you the right things. I had rejected one film because I was not comfortable kissing on screen.

"Two months later, I got another film and I called the same director, whose film I had rejected, for some guidelines and he guided me properly. It's unlike Bollywood. Here people will misguide you and take you in the wrong direction. That's what happened with me," said Sneha.

The 22-year-old feels she owes a lot to southern cinema. "I won't stop doing films in the south ever. It teaches you how to be an actor...how to be a lady. I don't know about Bollywood as I haven't done much work here."

But at the same time she is keen to leave her mark in Bollywood as well and says she will be less choosy about roles than earlier.

"I am going to do any role now that takes me to another level. If my role is good, I don't mind even if it's a D-grade film," said Sneha.

"I was choosy, but it didn't work for me. I need to learn because that's what an actor is all about. She needs to play different kinds of characters...You can't stick to one genre."

Asked if she has any regrets about her initial years in Bollywood, Sneha said: "I don't regret but if I am to re-do, I will re-do now. I don't regret because 'Lucky' gave me name; people know me today because of 'Lucky'."

The girl is unaware that the palace is cursed and that no woman has ever survived there. What happens to her forms the rest of the plot.

"`Jamunia` is a tale dedicated to every Indian woman who loves her family dearly and is ready to help and support them in any given situation. It portrays the power of a woman who can go to any extent to save her family from any harm that befalls them. `Jamunia` exposes the territories and locations never seen on television," said Yash Patnaik, producer of the show, in a press release.

Comedian Raju Srivastav revealed his struggling days

Comedian Raju Srivastav here Wednesday revealed that his ability to mimic megastar Amitabh Bachchan gave him his initial recognition.

"When I came to Mumbai, most people used to entertain the audience imitating Dev Anand, Raj Kumar and Shatrughan Sinha. No one used to do any mimicry of Amitabh Bachchan. After me Sudesh Bhonsle started doing it. It was almost at the same time. But he could only speak in that voice but I could speak, dance, cry and laugh, all in Bachchan style. This helped me gain initial recognition here," Raju Srivastav told reporters at a conference organised by 92.7 Big FM, for whom he has donned the role of an RJ.

Raju`s big break came with the talent show "The Great Indian Laughter Challenge".

He, however, admits radio is a different ball game altogether.

"In radio, the content is very important and it is complemented by the presentation. I will have to doubly underline the punch line of every joke I deliver," he said.

Raju Srivastav will be joining Vrajesh Hirjee on the breakfast show "92.7 FM ki laughter local" from next Monday.

He will be presenting his humorous take on day-to-day life issues and had already got some ideas for Holi and the upcoming Union budget.

Asked if he would go with a prepared script or crack jokes spontaneously, he said: "Both. We will prepare a structure for every day but there will be a lot of spontaneity in the programme. I have worked with Vrajesh before and we gel very well."

Raju Srivastav is also doing "Sone Ki Barish" which is a campaign where listeners of Big FM get to win gold coins each hour of the day.

This is not Raju Srivastav`s first stint with radio. He revealed that during his struggling days he worked for a short while in All India Radio.

Shah Rukh Khan's KKR team putting on hold their association with Lux Cozi

Buckling under pressure from Muslim religious groups and other sections, the Shah Rukh Khan-owned Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders Monday announced they were putting on hold their association with innerware brand Lux Cozi.

KKR had drawn flak from various sections for associating with the innerware brand owned by Ashok Todi, an accused in the suicide case of Rizwanur Rahman - a Muslim computer teacher who had married Todi`s daughter Priyanka.

"Respecting the sentiments of Kolkata and people of Bengal, both Lux Industries and KKR have decided to put their association on hold until issues are resolved and the sensitivities of the aggrieved group are adequately addressed," the team said in a release.

A KKR official said with the deal off, the players` jerseys will not sport the logo of the innerware brand.

"In terms of advertisement, merchandising, and branding of uniform, which were the outcome of the tie-up, none of them will now happen," the official said.

"Shah Rukh Khan`s endorsements of the company`s products will also stop. And the advertisements will be taken off the media," he said.

"As for merchandising, some pants, cricketing gear and T-shirts have already been sold out. We will put a stop to all orders which were supposed to hit the market in the coming days," he said.

As per the contract, the innerwear brand was to be associated with KKR`s apparel merchandising, while the company had also roped in Shah Rukh as its brand ambassador.

Earlier this month, a Muslim cleric issued a fatwa seeking a boycott of SRK`s latest film "My Name is Khan" for KKR`s tie-up with Lux Cozi.

"He has lots of money. Why is he becoming the brand ambassador of a company owned by such a controversial man? I am issuing a fatwa to all Hindus and Muslims to boycott the movie," said Syed Noor-ur-Rehman Barkati, the Shahi Imam of Tipu Sultan Mosque in Kolkata.

However, Barkati welcomed SRK`s decision Monday. "I appreciate his gesture of parting ways with the Todis."

Some thinkers had also called a meeting in the city Monday to protest KKR`S tie-up with the brand.

The death of Rizwanur, whose body was found Sep 21, 2007, along the railway tracks at Patipukur near the city`s suburb of Dum Dum, sparked outrage following allegations that Todi had influenced several police officers to bring pressure on the youth to opt out of the marriage with his daughter.

Several police officers, including the city police commissioner, were later removed from their posts for their alleged role in Rizwanur`s death. Todi, two of his relatives and four senior city police officers were among those later chargesheeted for allegedly abetting Rizwan`s suicide.

Sunidhi Chauhan is the three judges of the fifth season of Indian Idol

Singer Sunidhi Chauhan, whose career took off after she featured in a music reality show years ago, will now take centrestage as one of the three judges oi the fifth season of `Indian Idol`.

"Annu Malek, Sunidhi Chauhan and Salim Merchant (of composer duo Salim-Sulaiman) will be the judges for `Indian Idol 5`," a source from Sony TV told IANS.

The show will be a first time experience for Sunidhi, who won "Meri Awaaz Suno" in 1996, as a full-fledged judge for any reality show. Salim, on the other hand, has been a judge for show "Chak De Bachche". But "Indian Idol" will be a completely new ballgame for him too.

This season of "Indian Idol" will be the fifth time that Annu Malek would be sitting in the judge`s chair.

In the last season, Bollywood quotient was high with actress Sonali Bendre and Farah Khan teaming up with Annu Malek. But this time, producers have concentrated on getting judges with a strong musical backing.

The show, to be hosted by "Indian Idol 1" winner Abhijeet Sawant and former participant Prajakta Shukre, is expected to go on air in April this year.

Director Anurag Basu has rubbished the Kites reports

Director Anurag Basu has rubbished reports that producer Rakesh Roshan wanted `3 Idiots` helmer Rajkumar Hirani to edit his film `Kites`.

The reports claimed that Roshan wanted Hirani to take over the editing of the much awaited Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori starrer, but was turned down.

"I wish the rumours were true. I really respect Raj Kumar Hirani and he is a dear friend too. I would have loved to take his inputs but its too late now, my film was edited locked, sealed and delivered in November last week. I am sure Raju must be having a hearty laugh over it," Basu told reporters.

Roshan has already roped in Hollywood director Brett Ratner of `Rush Hour` series and `X-Men: The Last Stand` fame, to edit the international version of the film.

The much-awaited film will release on May 21 with both Hindi and English versions simultaneously splashing the screens in over 60 countries.

The film will be released worldwide by Reliance BIG Pictures and the English version of `Kites` will be presented and re-worked by Ratner.

The film stars Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan and Mexican actress Barbara Mori besides Kangana Ranaut, Kabir Bedi and Nick Brown.

The music is composed by Rajesh Roshan, cinematography by Ayananka Bose and stunt coordination by Hollywood`s Spiro Razatos.

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt's film will be shot entirely in Pakistan

For all you Bollywood buffs, here’s another bollywood writer who is set to make her directorial debut this year.

You have heard about scriptwriters turning director, but this story has a fresh twist to it.

Shagufta Rafique, the scriptwriter who is associated with Mahesh Bhatt’s banner Vishesh Films is all set to make her directorial debut. According to close sources, the scriptwriter will shoot her first film soon and the film will be shot entirely in Pakistan.

Though nothing much is known about the cast of the film, but sources say that this time the Bhatt’s might look beyond casting their inhouse hero Emraan Hashmi.

Mahesh Bhatt confirmed the news and added, "You have heard it right. This time our film will be directed by Shagufta Rafique. She will be shooting the film in Pakistan. At the moment she is busy doing the recce of the locations."

The film assumes significance for its filming location which will be Pakistan. By all measures a bold decision from the Bhatt camp.

Shahid Kapoor is miffed by the comparisons between his father

Shahid Kapoor is miffed by the comparisons that are being drawn between his father Pankaj Kapoor’s directorial debut ‘Mausam’ and the Hollywood hit Top Gun. Rumourmongers have suggested that Kapoor senior’s film is a rip-off of the Tom Cruise-starrer. This has left beta Shahid Kapoor a tad upset.

“I am relatively new to the industry but at least respect my dad’s credibility as a film personality. Mausam, which actually is a working title, has nothing to do with ’Top Gun’ except for the fact that Tom Cruise played the role of a naval flight officer while in Mausam I play an air force officer,” Shahid is quoted as saying by a news agency.

Shahid did not stop at that. He added that those who have known the credentials of his father should have known better before jumping to conclusions.

“My father’s career spans more than 25 years and he has been known for his original work even as an actor…Do you think that for his own film as a director, he would end up remaking another film,” Shahid tossed a rhetorical question.

Speaking about the movie, Shahid said he would be singularly devoted to his dad’s film in the coming days because the subject demands it.

“Mausam is the kind of film that an actor should be doing in a single stretch without working on anything else. The script is such that as an actor, I have to dedicate all my time and presence to it,” Shahid said.

Shahid has already begun preparing for his role. The film’s shooting starts in April this year.

Actress Esha Deol participating in a camel race in Jaisalmer

Esha Deol, in her own words, is bruised black and blue. After participating in a camel race in Jaisalmer and doing road stunts in Goa for her mother’s production Tell Me Oh Khuda, she can barely move a limb.

"The director Mayur Puri and the fight master Parvez Bhai forgot I was a girl and therefore delicate in my own way. This has been the most physically demanding experience of my life," Esha, who was last seen in Hijack, said.

Twenty-seven years after mum Hema Malini got on a camel in the Rajasthan deserts to sing the haunting Ae dil-e-nadaan in Kamal Amrohi’s Razia Sultan, Esha rode a camel in Jaisalmer.

"In Razia Sultan, mom was singing on the camel. I was wincing in pain. For 10 days I rode the camel like a professional for a camel race along with Arjan Bajwa, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Sudhandhu Pande. I was the only girl in the team. But people seemed to forget that. But if I may say so, I had the best calves on display in the typical Rajasthani camel-rider’s costume, the kurta lungi and all," said Esha, 28.

For the first few she was in a daze.

"The seat on top of the camel is so rough and so unfriendly to comfortable riding, my knees and inner thighs were constantly bruised. When my mother saw I was hurt, she was livid. But I told her to chill. And we continued shooting on the camels for a good week after that. Now I can call myself an expert camel rider," the actress said.

Her training in kick-boxing held her in good stead.

"For the last two years I’ve subconsciously been training for this film. I needed to get physically fit. Which I’ve done. And I needed to mature emotionally. That too, I think, I’ve achieved."

She says shooting Tell Me Oh Khuda has been like shooting three different films.

"We shoot in three different continents with three different cinematographers. So it’s like doing three different films. In Turkey I shot with Rishi Kapoorji and in Jaisalmer I’m shooting with Vinod Khannaji."

Now Esha wants to bring her father Dharmendra and mom together for the last segment of the film.

"It’s a dream for me to have them in the same film as me, so that one day I can tell my grandchildren, ’I made this happen’. And I will make it happen."

Mahesh Bhatt planned on the Australia racial attacks based movie

In the wake of the series of racial attacks against Indian students in Australia, a Bollywood film being planned on the subject is now being hastened into production.

The problem is will Australia allow a film on such sensitive subject to be shot in the country? Mahesh Bhatt’s “Crook: It’s Good To Be Bad’ to be directed by Mohit Suri, will go into the ugly world of racism in Australia.

Attacks on Indian students in Australia notwithstanding Bollywood’s filmmakers continue to shoot their films in the land of the Aussies. The unit of Karan Johar’s “Stepmom’ (tentative title) which included Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal has recently returned from Sidney.

But would Suri’s “Crook: It’s Good To Be Bad’ be allowed to shot in the country that the film will categorically deride for allowing foreign (Asian) students to be segregated and attacked?

Throwing light on the film’s theme Mahesh Bhatt says, “”Crook: It’s Good To Be Bad’ chronicles the journey of an indifferent young Indian who believes in the I-ME-MYSELF creed, until the guy gets sucked into the quagmire of hate when racial war breaks out in Australia.”

The films, says Bhatt, is the story of the young protagonist’s (Emraan Hashmi) journey from apathy to sensitivity about the way young students are treated abroad.

If the Australian government grows conscious of the fact that Bhatt’s film condemns racial policies in the country it would in all probability bar director Suri from shooting in the country.

Remember how Deepa Mehta’s film “Water’ on the poignant plight of the widows in Varanasi had to be shot in Sri Lanka after the shooting was disrupted in India?

Mahesh Bhatt, no stranger to risks and controversies will probably sneak into Australia quietly, shoot his film and return before the Aussies realize what the film is about.

Or else Suri and Bhatt have another choice. They can shoot in another country and pass it off as Australia.

However Mahesh Bhatt is hopeful. “We are not demonizing Australia. We are taking a more enlightened view on the subject. We are hopeful there would be no problem getting to shoot in Australia. I’m certain Australians will stretch themselves to help us shoot in their land. Our film’s concerns are life-affirming.”

Either way “Crook: It’s Good To Be Bad’ promises to be one more rule-bending work of cinema from Mahesh Bhatt.

Bollywood actress Tabu, who is back after a long hiatus with `Toh Baat Pakki`, insists that her absence from the silver screen was due to her selectiveness.

"I have always been selective about my films. I am not interested in something that doesn`t excite me," said Tabu, who was in the city yesterday to promote her upcoming film `Toh Baat Pakki`.

Tabu, who was last seen with megastar Amitabh Bachchan in `Cheeni Kum` in 2007, said that the film which she takes up should be exciting enough for her, be it the character, story line or the plot.

"The long period of absence (from the silver screen) was an extension of my selectiveness. I was waiting for something exciting to happen...characters that inspire and make me sit up," she said.

The National Award-winning actress said that happiness and peace matter the most in her life.

"I only do things that make me happy. There are no compromises to this self-set rule," she said.

On her upcoming film which is due for release on Friday, Tabu said that she plays the role of a protective elder sister, who is out to find a suitable match for her sister.

Talking about her co-star in the film Sharman Joshi who tasted success in Aamir Khan starrer `3Idiots`, Tabu said, "I think highly of him as an actor".

The actress also said that she would like to films `Maachis` in the future. "I loved the movie, it was close to my heart. Definitely, I would love to do something like that again," she said.

Maharashtra CM Shri Ashok Chauhan to catch the first show of 'MNIK'

Sense prevailed in the B-town as 10 multiplex owners in Mumbai decided to go ahead with the screening while the single screen theatres decided against showing the movie for the time being as they are not in a position to meet the requirements for extra security.

Giving a positive signal to the people of Mumbai, Maharashtra CM Shri Ashok Chauhan amid unprecedented security for the film’s release, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil drove to multiplex INOX to catch the first show of ’MNIK’.

There was some protest at Fame Andheri but police came in and arrested the protesters and the show went on peacefully. King Khan who is in Berlin, tweeted early on Friday morning, "good m’ing mumbai. wotever the fate of the film, never wished this upon the city that made my dreams come true & gave me all. i belong to u (sic)."

The film opened to full houses in Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and several other cities.

Shah Rukh Khan's online tickets sold out in five seconds in Berlin

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s presence at the Berlin International Film Festival acknowledges that he has fans not only in Mumbai, but all over the world. The online tickets for his My Name is Khan, which is being targeted by the Hindu right wing Shiv Sena in Mumbai, were sold out in five seconds here.

People who phoned the Berlinale authorities five minutes after ticketing opened were told they were way too late.

The film’s tickets were auctioned on e-Bay for 1,000 euros (about Rs 60,000) each.

Fans had not slept all night to keep their places in the queue despite the minus temperature in Berlin. Those who arrived at 6 a.m. were in tears.

Jenny Watkinson, assigned the ’Shah Rukh Khan department’ in the International Relations office of Dieter Kosslick, Berlin film festival director, says, "I’ve never seen anything like it. This year it’s expected to be even bigger than in 2008 [during Om Shanti Om]. The online tickets for My Name is Khan were sold out in five seconds."

The film premieres in Berlin on Friday with a red carpet at the prestigious Berlinale Palast theatre on Potsdamer Platz.

Everyone was wondering if Shah Rukh Khan and team would be in Berlin, given that the Shiv Sena vandalised Mumbai theatres where advance bookings of the film opened because Shah Rukh said that Pakistani players should also participate in the Indian Premier League.

The film’s screening has police protection in both Mumbai and Berlin.

In Mumbai to protect Shah Rukh’s fans from the vandals, in Berlin to protect the star from a tsunami of hysterical fans who are expected from all over Europe.

Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Karan Johar are here for the premiere of My Name is Khan.

India has much reason to celebrate at the Berlin International Film Festival here as the country has a historic nine feature films in the Berlinale.

This is the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Film Festival, that opens Thursday and runs from February 11-21.
